Thank you to @hudsonriverpark for hosting our students and providing such an enriching educational experience. Our 9th Grade students recently embarked on an educational adventure to the Hudson River Park’s Pier 40 Wetlab.
Where they delved into the fascinating world of water quality and estuarine ecosystems. This hands-on learning experience provided them with valuable insights into the environmental health of our local waterways and the historical significance of oysters in these habitats.
One of the highlights of the visit was learning about the oysters that once thrived in the Hudson River. Students discovered the crucial role oysters play in maintaining water quality through their natural filtration abilities. They also explored the historical context of oyster populations in the estuary and the efforts being made to restore these vital organisms to their former abundance.
At the Pier 40 Wetlab, students engaged in activities to assess the water quality. They learned about various indicators of water health, such as pH levels, salinity, and dissolved oxygen, and how these factors influence the overall ecosystem. This immersive experience allowed students to apply scientific concepts in a real-world setting, enhancing their understanding of environmental science.
